You might have heard of hedgehogs. They're these little creatures with spikes all over their body, except we call them quills. The only parts of a hedgehog's body where you can't find quills are the stomach and arms. The African Pygmy variety is at the top in terms of popularity.

Hedgehogs are very alert creatures. They can cross a six-feet distance in a second. And the moment a predator manages to corner a hedgehog, it turns itself into a ball of hardened skin and spikes. The belly doesn't have quills, so it's only natural that the animal would want to protect it.

In the wild, 90% of their diet consists of insects. But as pets, their access to bugs is limited, so they'll eat what their human offers them. A hedgehog's hearing is sensitive, so try not to make any sudden noise that can startle your pet.

They evolved this way in response to constant threats from predators, but there are ways to get your hedgehog accustomed to the sounds of your daily routine. Inform your vet if it remains a concern after weeks of sharing a house with you.

If your pet is showing any signs of illness, make an appointment with your animal hospital Louisville, KY.
