Laos is a Southeast Asia country that is bordered by Cambodia, China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Half of the country's woodlands are covered by an evergreen tropical rainforest. Among the country's nicknames are the "Kingdom of a Million Elephants".

Native Animals

Water buffalos are large bovine animals. They live in Laos and the rest of southern Asia. They're used for plowing rice fields and transportation.

Asian elephants are abundant in Laos. They are the largest surviving terrestrial mammals in Asia and make their home in the forests.

Pygmy slow lorises are primates that live in thick tropical forests and bamboo groves.

Clouded leopards are full-grown leopards that live in thick forest habitats and climb trees. They can be found in the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area in northeastern Laos.

Sun bears are the smallest species of bears in the world. To protect these bears, the Laos government created the Tat Kuang Si and Luang Prabang Wildlife Sanctuary.

Spindlehorns are among the rarest mammals on the Earth. They're only found in the Annamite Range in Laos. They're closely related to cattle, antelopes, and goats. Both males and females have horns.

Indochinese tigers live in forests, grasslands, mountains, and hills.

Lar gibbons are a species of primates native to southeastern Asia. They inhabit forests, rainforests, bamboo forests, and evergreen forests.

Bengal monitors are a species of monitor lizards found in southeastern and western Asia.

Javan rhinoceroses are a very rare species of rhino native to southeastern Asia.

Greater hog badgers are a large species of mustelids native to southeast Asia.

Indian muntjacs are a species of deer native to southern and southeastern Asia.

Red-shanked doucs are a species of Old World monkeys native to the Indochinese Peninsula in southeastern Asia.

Birds

Sarus cranes are the tallest flying birds in the world. They live in the Bolaven plateau in Attapeu province in Laos.

Giant ibises are a species of wading birds. They live in southern Laos.

Slender-billed vultures are native to southeastern Asia and sub-Himalayan regions.

Marine Animals

Irrawaddy dolphins are native to the Mekong River.

Mekong giant catfish are a large species native to the Mekong Basin in southeastern Asia.

Asian giant soft-shell turtles are a species of freshwater turtles native to southeastern Asia.

Siamese crocodiles are freshwater crocodiles and medium-sized species native to Laos and other Asian countries.
