Almost Mudville

This time of year, here, where air
is slow to warm and snow remains
—defiantly granular in the shadow
of the barn and the stone wall—
the waning winter wears thin,
wears many weary souls even thinner,
thinner even than the windows of ice
the river leaves on its banks, inviting
heedless eager children, mudbooted,
to smash the windows and play.
