Ciao Theatre Season 2023-2024

By Peter Gruner on June 29, 2024

Last weekend, I was at the Players Guild Theatre's AGM. Annual General Meeting.

It marked the end of the Guild's theatre season. And most of the other community theatres in the area had an AGM around the same time.

I don't usually go to AGMs. But the cast of Burn was encouraged to go because the Guild was having it's first Audience Favourite Award. All four shows produced were in the running.

Odds were good for me because I had been in two of the Guild's shows. Assisted Living The Home for the Holidays and Burn. Half of the Guild's season!

Alas, it was not to be.

Kudos to everyone involved in the production God and the Indian by Drew Hayden Taylor.

Although I was in only two shows, it felt like a long season.

We started music rehearsals for Assisted Living: The Home for the Holidays last July. Even though the show didn't open until November.

I auditioned for Burn in November. Rehearsals didn't start until April, but learning the lines hovered over me. And I was busy with choir rehearsals.

It was a fun season. Two very different shows.

I made new friends.

Some acquaintances turned into friends.

And some goodbyes were said. Rest in Peace, Ivan.

Even though it was only two shows, I played eight characters.

Okay, a few of them were non-speaking parts. And were basically an excuse to wear some of the silly shirts the director bought. But still! They involved costume changes and different attitudes.

I got better as an actor and a performer.

Looking forward to next season!
