Running Meditation

By Peter Gruner on June 30, 2024

I love to run.

But I don't always run consistently.

I will go for months without running.

Which is weird.

When I'm running, I let my mind wander.

I don't need to listen to music. Or to a podcast. Or an audio book.

I'm happy to run with only my thoughts to accompany me.

And I can run for hours. If my body is willing.

I ran for almost two and half hours today.

It's a great form of meditation. And I get lots of ideas while I run.

For some reason, it's the process of getting ready to run that throws me off.

If I think about it too much, I'll dawdle. And the running window passes.

It's tricky during the week. The best time to run is before work.

But if I don't get to bed on time, I'm not going to wake up early enough to run.

And it's tricky running in the evening after work. Usually there's other things to do.

Then a week passes. Or two. And I haven't run.

At my age, missing a couple of weeks of running might mean having to build up my base all over again.

The key is keep going. Even if it's only a little bit.

It's easier when there's a race to train for. But I want to be running without needing a race to coax me to put on those running shoes.

The goal is to run three times a week.

If I can focus on the joy, I get from running, maybe I can convince myself to stick to the schedule and get those runs in.
