Friday …

By Ann Schwartz on August 2, 2024

Oh, the bounty! …and the chaos.

At a glance, there looks like nothing but poppies are planted in the vegetable garden. Gary would rather things look more orderly, but I haven't spent as much time in this division of the acreage as I had intended too.

I don't want to eradicate the volunteer flowers; to me they are a gift, a beautiful annual plant that reseeds itself. I agree that everything would look tidier if I permitted fewer poppies to grow between rows, or within well marked rows of delicate (and useful) vegetable crops.

I'm doing my best.

When I told Gary about the wasp nest in the raspberry patch, he broke it up and sprayed. Neither of us like to kill, or even to add insecticide to our organic garden. But he calls himself the IDF, and took control. Seemed heroic to me: I'm not allergic to bees or wasps, but resent getting stung.

I had a rough night. I'm waiting for further diagnosis on my shoulder. I dreamed that I considered sawing off my own left arm by myself, with a tool from my beloved arsenal of tools.

Quell nightmare!

After several weeks, I can at least lift my coffee cup without pain if I choose the right angle. This is cramping my style, and not just my coffee drinking style.

I was comparing notes on shoulder pain with a long time friend, a gal who went to school with Pat (my ex). Not that it makes much difference what was the cause of the situation, I offered, "Your injury was caused by many years of hard work. Mine was one ridiculous slip and fall." 🤷🏼‍♀️

Said friend underwent surgery on each shoulder. That terrifies me.

Today I plan to take a break from raspberry picking. I believe I have at least 10 gallons in the freezer. I've sold some through Facebook; I might need to make some for family and friends.

I need to tackle the poppy vegetable garden, where we haven't kept up with eating. Oh well, the chickens love romaine lettuce etc… I've put in a request for more hens from a friend.

Hope your day is fruitful enough, with no biting insects or body pain.

Love, Ann
