English Heritage have carried out a major restoration and improvement programme of Clifford's Tower in York. This medieval building was once a famous landmark, but its tragic history saw it fall into disuse and, despite standing on an impressive mound, it was even eclipsed by other larger buildings that once surrounded it. The tower was last used in the English Civil War and came close to collapsing and being demolished in the years that have followed.

This year, English Heritage opened the tower to the public for the first time. A new roof has been added, along with several suspended walkways inside the structure itself. Several of the spiral staircases have been made fit for use again. They lead up to the roof that also serves as a viewing platform from which the City of York can be seen. There is plenty of history recounted inside the tower and a very informative guidebook on offer. The tower still sits on top of its mound, but new stairs have been added that include seats at the halfway point for people who might find the climb somewhat tiring.
