Here's a mini assignment in preparation for the course I'll be attending in October, ICB, Illustrating Children's Books, by MATS. I had to pick an item in the photo and draw it in any medium and style I liked. I used colored pencils to test the color palette.

I chose a butterfly. Then, I had to make up a story in my head while I drew it. This is a mock-up, not the final illustration.

So here it is. Yep! I envisioned myself as the main character running after a hare in the swamp. I really did run after a hare as a child, believe it or not. This one is a giant hare. But mine at the time ran so fast I couldn't keep up, and he disappeared into the swamp.

But then my character came upon a field full of butterflies. As a child, when we were packing up to leave the cottage at the summer's end, I encountered many Monarch butterflies fluttering their wings in a field, getting ready to migrate. I stood motionless as the sky turned orange and black, and the swarm of butterflies flew like leaves in the wind. Wow! I didn't know about migration then, but now I do. They were amazing! It was quite the sight. Who wouldn't want to fly with the butterflies?

I hope you like it.

Erano fantastici! Era proprio uno spettacolo. Chi non vorrebbe volare con le farfalle?

Spero vi piaccia.
