Journal Writing Prompts for August 2024

Are you keeping a journal? Do you want to add more entries for August? Whether you have been journaling for years or just starting, writing down your thoughts and emotions is therapeutic. If you are searching for inspiration on what to write, consider the following journal prompts for August.

  1. How did July go for you, your family, friends, work, and community? List the highs and lows of the month.
  2. Write down your goals for August.
  3. How would you like this month to be different than last month? Why?
  4. Did you set goals at the beginning of 2024? Did you achieve them? Are your goals still a work in progress? Go into detail.
  5. Write down your goals for the remaining months of 2024.
  6. What have you learned about yourself since the beginning of 2024? Are they good traits? Why or why not?
  7. What new hobby would you like to start before the end of 2024? What is stopping you?
  8. List 5 things in your life that you are grateful for right now.
  9. What brings you inspiration? Why?
  10. What new healthy habit do you want to start this month? Why?
  11. What old habit are you trying to stop this month? What steps are you taking to eliminate this habit?
  12. What are your thoughts on the latest news stories? What ones bother you the most? Why?
  13. Free write for 20 minutes.
  14. Do you have a favorite writing space? Where? Why do you like this spot?  
  15. Write a letter to your future self. Talk about the steps you are taking to live your best life.
  16. What made you laugh today? Why?
  17. What were you doing today at 8 am? Noon? 6 pm? Go into detail.
  18. Describe a happy summertime memory from your childhood. Why does this one stand out the most?
  19. What trip or activity do you want to complete before summer is over? Draw up a plan.
  20. Create an end-of-summer bucket list for you and your family.
  21. Are you good at saying no to extra work or responsibilities? Why or why not?
  22. What steps are you taking for self-care? Do you need to focus on your well-being?
  23. How would you like friends or family members to describe you?
  24. Where is your happy place? Where do you like to go to relax?
  25. If you could rid the world of one thing, what would you pick? Why? Can you do a small part to help with this goal?
  26. What is your favorite meal? Why? Is this an all-time favorite or something new?
  27. Do you like to try new foods? What is one food you will not try? Why?
  28. What is the best part of a rainy day? Why?
  29. Do you have plans for Labor Day weekend? What are you going to do?
  30. Did you travel or celebrate 3-day weekends as a child? What did you do?
