After being poisoned, a ruthless criminal agent, portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, has less than 24 hours to seek revenge on her enemies, developing an unexpected connection with the daughter of one of her previous victims in the process.

She's a trained killer who believes she's reached the end of her career and wants to retire. However, after completing her final job, she gets poisoned, and she then goes on a revenge spree to take vengeance on those responsible.

Kate is really violent and has some awesome kills. If you love Extractions or the John Wick films, then you're going to enjoy a lot of this. The special effects, especially in the action sequences, are impressive and really gory. Each action scenes are different, I appreciate this. It doesn't feel old or stale. I wish it went on a bit further or had a bit more time, but it makes sense because of the poison. Time is her worst enemy, and she needs to get revenge before time runs out. I appreciate how her situation gives her nothing to lose, making a lethal assassin even more dangerous. At the same time, making her weaker and weaker.

The story, which takes place in the space of just one night. The violence goes hand-in-hand in with the story perfectly. Since it's located in Japan, I like how it uses what the country is known for. There is a hint of anime, bright neon lights and colours, Japanese music, and the yakuza.

As much as I was enjoying watching the action scenes, the story is yet another predictable one. There will be a point that the truth will be laid out for the characters, causing them to question their role in life. This is not the best move. The story is based around assassins and the yakuza, so their morals and motivations are different to most people.

I wish Kate is a relatable character. She's cool and badass, but not someone that I care about. I didn't feel any sympathy for her. Let's not forget that she's an assassin. She's an anti-hero here, but that doesn't mean she's a good person. If this is a series instead of a 2-hour movie, then I believe it would work. The character needs time to win over the audience. However, we get to see her given the opportunity to see growth and change.

The cinematography is good overall. The camera work during the fight scenes are good, it's stylistic and intense. It really pulls you into the movie. The standout is the colours used. There are bright neon colours, red and blue, or white and blue. I really like the colours here.

Woody Harrelson has a role here too. He's like the agent and mentor for Mary Elizabeth Winstead, but he is misused. He's doesn't have a lot of screen time either. When he's on, I don't feel any sense of power, threat or control. It's clearly not his fault. It's either the writing or the directing. He does play an important role later in the movie, but once that happens, it just falls flat.

Overall, Kate is a decent watch. Don't go in expecting it to have complex characters or outstanding storytelling. I enjoyed the action scenes, and I feel like most people will like it too.

Final Score - 3/5
