Bleach Thousand-Year Blood War will be released soon. As such I am on a journey to rewatch each episode of the Bleach anime and give a short breakdown and recap for each episode. This is the second time that I am rewatching the series this year. I am really excited to go through this journey once again. This is my preparation for the upcoming final arc. Here is Episode 3: The Older Brother's Wish, the Younger Sister's Wish.
Arc: Agent of the Shinigami arc / Manga Chapter: 4-6
We get a brief recap of Episode 2: The Shinigami's Work, and then dive into an explanation from Rukia that there is a strong hollow that is using other hollows to hunt Ichigo. Ichigo displays a moral issue with killing the hollow since it was a normal human spirit at one point. Rukia convinces him that he has to kill Acidwire and lets him know that the hollow will attack Orihime too. While rushing to Orihime's, Rukia explains that Hollows will attack their own families because they are fallen souls.
Orihime and Tatsuki are then attacked in Orihime's home. Orihime's soul is forcibly removed from her body by Acidwire and Tatsuki is knocked aside by an invisible foe, wounding her shoulder. Outside of her body, Orihime can see the hollow, Tatsuki being attacked and her unconscious body on the floor. She courageously tries to save Tatsuki. Upset that Orihime does not recognise him, Acidwire goes to attack her. Ichigo makes it just in time to save her. The hollow retreats but returns and takes Orihime with him as he escapes.
Using Orihime as a hostage, Ichigo is unable to fully counter the hollow. Ichigo gets knocked unconscious. Orihime then recognises her brother, Sora inside of the hollow. This gives them a chance to have a small conversation where Sora laments and admits to being lonely and jealous. Orihime begs Sora to leave Ichigo alone, this upsets him and sets him off so he tries to kill her. Ichigo having regained consciousness starts his fight with Sora once more and lectures him about being an older brother. Sora then sees the hairpin he had purchased for Orihime and we get flashbacks of their past after he had taken/saved her from their parents. Sora keeps zoning in and out between his brother self and his hollow self while everything is going on. In a final battle with Ichigo and after a decisive move, he moves in for the kill, except Orihime sacrifices herself to save both Ichigo and her brother.
Orihime and Sora finally manage to have a proper conversation and she manages to clear up the misunderstanding. She had not forgotten him, she had wanted to show him that her life was happy and that he did not need to worry about her, so that he could pass on. Rukia explains why Sora was attacked while Sora fights with his inner hollow. Sora decides to commit suicide, purifying himself with Ichigo's Zanpaktu, rather than turn back into a monster. Orihime manages to say a few final words to bring closure to her and her brother.
The next day, Orihime had been given a memory replacement and told a ridiculous story. Ichigo tells Rukia he is not ready to commit to the whole soul reaper thing but he is willing to assist her with her work for the time being.
Memorable moments of the episode:
Rewatching there are a few moments from each episode that really stand out. In episode three, Ichigo lecturing Orihime's brother, a hollow, is one of those moments for me. The resulting quote has always stayed with me since the first time I heard it. I have also featured it below. Orihime saving Ichigo is another really memorable moment since it leads to Sora purifying himself and Orihime being able to get some closure.
Fight in this episode:
Kurosaki vs. Acidwire (concluded)
Bleach Quote I like from this episode
"Do you know why big brothers are born first? There's a reason. They're born first so that they can look out for their little brothers and sisters and protect them."
