Tortoises, like other cold-blooded creatures, rely on their outside surroundings to control their body temperature. Ideally, they must be kept outdoors with a provision for an enclosed space that replicates their natural habitat. Once you decide to take a tortoise as a pet, you will have to be creative as much as possible. You must improvise a safe and comfortable habitat for your tortoise even if he is no longer in his natural territory.
Long-time tortoise owners advise new tortoise owners not to use an aquarium to shelter their pet tortoise. While this may be the easiest thing to do, this is not recommended. Since aquariums are made of glass, they may not provide the ventilation that a tortoise needs.
Instead of using a glass aquarium, you can opt to use a plastic storage container instead. They usually come in different sizes, big enough to be used as a tortoise shelter. Plastic containers are also lightweight and drilling holes or cutting the sides would not be hard to do.
