Just before Christmas it appeared that Gregg's had removed their ham and cheese melt baguette for reasons that I still have not been able to work out. I, personally, really loved being able to buy just a basic ham and cheese sandwich from a shop on the high street that was tasty and affordable. Not all vegan food needs to be fancy or a culinary experience. Sometimes the basics are just what we need, and there were so many times where this basic baguette helped improve a rough day at work. But Gregg's stoped making this and it would appear that it is not likely to return either.
They have instead replaced this baguette with the Southern Fried Chicken baguette. It contains (as you could guess) southern fried chicken, red onions, chipotle mayo and applewood cheese. Is it super fancy? No, not really. But it is definitely a bit of a step up from just ham and cheese.
I found this to be quite plain actually. But in a good way. I find sometimes anything 'southern fried' and be really overpowering with the spices and ruin the product. But this chicken was very well balanced when you factor in the sweetness of the onion and the chipotle sauce. It still had that slight heat to it but it was not overpowering nor lingering. It was actually...quite basic. But that's why I go to Gregg's, for some good, old fashioned, basic comfort food.
This sandwich was around £2 and it definitely does the trick of being a good basic sandwich. If you're in a rush and want a hearty (and honestly very generously portioned) sandwich then this is definitely a recommendation. It is a slight step up from the basic ham and cheese, but it is nothing special or game changing. But again, it's Gregg's. I don't expect it to be. My one downside is that I really hope they bring back the ham and cheese, because as it stands there is only one vegan baguette option available. There are roughly 6 non-vegan options, but only one vegan, and I don't think that is really ok in this day and age.
Overall: 6/10. It's a perfectly fine sandwich, but as it is also the only vegan baguette option, I don't really have any other choice but to pick this if I want a cheap sandwich.
