As mentioned before I am currently working on achieving a number of my fitness goals. One big component of that is eating my macros, and at the stage I am at I am actually having to increase my protein intake so I can build that lean muscle. I am therefore constantly on the lookout for high protein options that are not super expensive, but also not massive meals.
I am always quite impressed with Vivera products. The products I have tried have been consistently tasty and price wise they are quite midlevel. Not the most expensive option out there, but still quite pricey if buying regularly. They haven't released many new options in a while so I was very excited to see these drumsticks finally hit my local Tesco shelves! I do not know if they have been released for Veganuary (it doesn't specify on the box covering) so I am hoping that they keep these around for the rest of the year as they were very good.
These chicken drumsticks were a total shock to me. I have to admit that looking at them in the packet they looked a little...sad. They didn't feel overly weighty and they also seemed like a very small portion. Supposedly one serving is two of these drumsticks, so we bought two packets just to be on the safe side as it does not look like 2 would be enough for anyone.
I was very surprised when I had my first bite. The outside was crispy while the inside was surprisingly fluffy. They were also very dense and were scarily similar in texture to a meat chicken drumstick. It was very tasty, having just a slight kick of pepper to make it really pop when you bit down.
I was right though and I feel two drumsticks is just not enough. They are dense but they are not overly filling. I feel if I had only had 2 I would still have been starving. We had these with just some plain rice and some boiled veg (the life of clean eating is not an exciting one but it does work) and with 4 drumsticks each we both felt very satisfied and comfortably full at the end of the meal.
Which brings us onto price. Because £3 per pack is not cheap and as I say you really need a packet each if you want a decent meal. So £6 for one meal is definitely on the expensive side. I would still recommend you try them but maybe as part of a smaller meal - possibly if you're having a little party and want some high quality party food? As the main part of the meal they are not enough and do work out very expensive, but as a side they are not a bad choice at all. I think from now on we will only buy these every so often as an actual meal but will most likely pick them up if we want picky food for an evening.
Overall: 6/10. Taste wise they cannot be faulted, but the price is unfortunately a big turn off for me. Definitely worth trying once to see if you think the taste can justify the price, but for me I'm still on the fence.
