This is a collaborative post.
The festive period is often the time when people gift pets to one another, as the old saying goes "a dog is for life, not just for Christmas!" Perhaps you've welcomed a lovely little puppy into your home now, and while you absolutely adore the little pooch, you're a little nervous too. If you're mostly accustomed to cats or smaller pets, then you may wonder if there are "tricks" to looking after a dog, or if their needs are much different.
Of course, this will depend on the breed you have. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will require less exercise than a Husky, for example, but they do still require it. On top of that, cat owners will note that dogs are much more possessive and much less independent than their feline friends. This can be a great or a slightly pestering change depending on your mood that day, but having a lovely furry pal who loves you no matter what can be a true balm for the soul.
So, without further ado, let's soothe those foremost worries and discuss how to care for your dog despite a lack of prior experience:
Head to a groomer
Groomers can help you understand the basics of puppy care, give your friend a once over, and also make recommendations based on their needs. For example, a shaggy coat might require treatment from time to time, especially against conditions like fleas. Moreover, you'll be able to ensure the puppy is cared for, and that any health issues on the surface have been spotted, and they'll happily show you how to trim the coat or how to keep them warm in winter by using an artificial coat on top of that.
While a groomer is not a vet, they have bottomless experience caring for all kinds of breeds and are happy to lend new owners their insight. On top of that, you'll build a good working relationship with them as you return with the same loving pooch over the months and years.
Consider Your Breed's Dietary Needs
Most dogs can eat similar foods, but they should always avoid certain harmful elements like chocolate. That being said, the size and activity level of your dog can affect their calorie needs, as well as how much protein they have.
Sometimes dietary sensitivities in your dog, sometimes evidenced by the accidents they have, can suggest a trip to the vets, or switching to food easier to digest, like grain free dog food. Feeding them well and in the right amounts can be a tough balance to strike, but it's important you get it right through gentle experimentation.
A Training Routine Is Non-Negotiable
You don't have to train your cat outside of where to conduct their business (in the litter tray usually), and what behaviors you don't like, such as them sleeping on your pillow. That's not because they can't be trained, only because they rarely want to. However, dogs require constant reinforcement from when they begin to develop as puppies because they need to know you're the boss, and where the boundaries lie.
Dogs also need to be socialised correctly and a trainer's session is perfect for that. This is more than learning tricks, it's about knowing when to say "no," and having them respond to it, how to stop them freaking out if they see another dog in the park, and how to praise good behaviour so it repeats. A training routine is non-negotiable, so make sure you invest in one.
Until next time
