One of the things our director, Matt Willson, wants to do for the play is have a pre-show.
That means that before the show starts, we actors come out as our characters and do stuff.
It's not part of the play.
And you don't hear us talking.
But the idea is that you see our characters interacting before the action starts. It gives you a sense of our relationships to each other.
It's funny because Matt has been talking about this idea since we started rehearsals. But tonight was the first time that we tried it.
And we open in two days.
I was getting a little anxious.
He wants us out there 30 minutes before the show starts. We start when people are let into the theatre and get to their seats.
Thirty minutes is a long time to be doing "stuff". Especially without a script.
But it went well. I was surprised.
And the thirty minutes passed quicker than I thought it would.
Don't worry. If you get to your seats late, you won't have missed anything important.
The preshow adds nuance. And it helps you feel like you know the characters better.
From an acting point of view, it lets you explore your character a little more.
Initially, I was skeptical of the idea of the preshow. But I'm fond of it now.
