A view of St. Peters, as seen from the rooftop breakfast deck at our hotel.
We are in Rome! No time for a lot of detail now, but I can't resist posting a little of what we're seeing here -- at least, what we are seeing from the hotel roof deck.
We have such a short time in Rome! Bob and I have both been before -- twice, in my case -- but Jon Morgan has not. In fact, this is his very first time in Europe.
We arrived early on the morning of May 14, took a taxi to our hotel, the Hotel Isa, which is near Castel Sant'Angelo, on the Vatican side of the river, and stowed our stuff with the front desk. The staff let us have breakfast on the rooftop breakfast deck, though technically we weren't yet staying there yet, since we had could not yet checked in. The breakfast buffet was sumptuous, way more than anything I'm accustomed to having for breakfast in Italy.
We were all exhausted that first morning, after being up on a red-eye flight all night. (Well, Bob slept on the plane, but Jon Morgan and I did not.) Jon Morgan left breakfast early to go downstairs to a little sitting room off the main lobby that the staff had said we could use until our room was ready. By the time Bob and I made it down there a few minutes later, he was sound asleep. Not long afterward, we were able to check into our room, to spend some time settling in (and sleeping more, in his case) until it was time for our Vatican tour. More on that later.
Did you know that there are parrots living in the wild in Rome? I had no idea, until they joined us on our rooftop deck at breakfast time. All the ones we saw were this brilliant shade of green. So beautiful!
Parrots were not are only feathered visitors at breakfast time, and were certainly not the boldest. These little sparrows would actually join me at the table, if I was the only one sitting there and kept still.
Another lovely view from the rooftop.
