The word strigoides means owl-form. The Tawny Frogmouth is a big-headed, stocky birds with rounded wings and short legs, often mistaken for an owl because it is also nocturnal (active at night) and it has front-facing eyes. It has grey, shaggy feathers, and is well camouflaged in trees (and practically invisible). Its large beak looks like a frog's mouth. The top of the beak has tufts of bristles. | | | |
