When we learned there is a new HK-style breakfast spot that opened downtown in the Danforth neighbourhood, we went one weekend to try.
Turns out, like a lot of brunch places in Toronto, expect a line up at Sammi. Depending on when you arrive, you may have to wait upwards of an hour for a table. They do not take reservations, so it is walk-in only.
Unlike the HK cafes in Hong Kong, the decor at Sammi has a modern aesthetic to it, and the atmosphere is less hustle and bustle; the staff isn't rushing you to finish, but the customers lining up for a table is hoping you finish ASAP.
Also, there isn't table sharing, unless you happen to be seated at a larger table with a smaller party. Table sharing is pretty common in Hong Kong; I remember having to share table with a stranger a few times and it was quite a culture shock because staff doesn't ask you if it's ok or if you want to share table.
Iced HK Milk Tea (included in HK-style and classic breakfast sets)
On the menu, you'll find some breakfast classics like bacon and eggs, along with HK-style breakfast and lunch sets.
Sunnyside up or scrambled eggs and toast comes with the HK-style breakfast sets.
Pineapple Bun with butter ($4.99) and Hash Browns, eggs and beans (classic breakfast set 2, $7.99)
Satay Beef Noodles (HK-style breakfast set B, $10.99)
I got the satay beef noodles, as it has been a very long time since I had it. The beef was velvety, but it lack the satay flavour. Overall, it is a decent amount of food in the sets. Service was pleasant, but I am not sure if it's worth a 45 minute wait. Nonetheless, it is nice to have a HK-style cafe that is not located uptown.
