My big entry into political campaigns was when I got to work on the Howard Dean campaign- I had a spot on the steering committee, sounds sexy but my first big job was to take notes at our meetings when the secretary went on vacation and I got to go to visibility events and bring my friends. What can I say? I was the low dog in the pack but I learned a TON about politics and specifically campaigns.
One important lesson has stuck with me all of these years:
What I learned was that when your campaign was NOT going to cross the finish line, it was the campaigns responsibility to hold the base together and to get them ready to be attached to the winning candidate's campaign.
We were told... dare I say we were INSTRUCTED to not discount a single thing that's Dean's delegates and supporters had to say about John Kerry. Let them vent, let them be angry but for the love of God, don't tell them to shut up. The reality was, if Howard's delegates went rogue it wouldn't look good at the convention would it?
Listen, one and just ONE Dean delegate at the convention said she wasn't going to support Kerry and Howard Dean's brother ran an intervention.
I knew her. I helped put her materials together when she ran for delegate ( it's a mini-campaign and you needed lit for that ) trust me she was a true believer.
She would jump the tracks for sure. I was certain of it. Keep in mind. She was ONE delegate to even hint that she wouldn't give her vote to Kerry and the Dean campaign took her very seriously.
Go ahead. " We have a dream candidate " people. Piss off more then one delegate and you won't have a candidate sending in his brother to talk a delegate off the edge of the cliff. The entire convention will go into panic mode and we will make a Trump Rally look like picnic at the park with hot-dogs and silly games like egg on a spoon race and stuff like that.
In fact, Kerry's campaign and the DNC gave a cool shout out to Dean's delegates at the convention. It was just a gesture to be sure but it was appreciated by most.
Here's the important part of my story: The Dean delegates were just as important to this process as Kerry's. So why, you maybe asking would the delegates for a lost campaign be important ?
We needed to show strength and unity. . That's why. The Democrats needed everybody on board for the nominating convention.
It was still tough though, to see Kerry up there and not Howard.
The keynote speaker was the highlight of the convention though. He was awesome and a bunch of us hoped he'd run for President one day.
So to the " Biden needs to step out crowd " who point out that his supporters are so blind and so stupid to his issues of age etc, that they are all like a bunch of dogs who have been on a chain for so long, that when you let them off they are too stupid to run.
Your not helping yourself- and I stress that again YOU ARE NOT HELPING YOURSELF. I shouldn't care if your stupid move bites you in the ass but I have a granddaughter and a dog to think about and I can't have you effing with their future.
You want to a race against Biden's campaign? ? Then read the room my friends and proceed with a lot of caution.
