Facebook kicked me out a few days ago. I can't access my account to see my feed, check the pages of my friends or the groups I belong to, or use Messenger.
Meta's explanation is that my account has been singled out as one that is required to add a new security protocol called Advanced Protection. It requires two-factor verification every time I want to get on the site. I looked up Advanced Protection and found that it is intended for the pages of elected officials and candidates for office, because their accounts may be targeted by hackers in the two months leading up to the election. But I am not an elected official or candidate. So this is just annoying.
Like everything else about Facebook, there is no appeal. I have no way of contacting the Meta powers that be to point out that I am not in politics. There is no opt-out. Some AI bot made a decision, and now I'm stuck with it. Unfortunately, I can't turn on the two-factor authentication because the page won't accept my password. Again, there is nowhere to go to get this to work.
Not having Facebook for a few days is not terrible. Of course, I don't know what I'm missing. I belong to several groups that use Messenger as our main forum for setting up meetings and such. Maybe Important Things have been happening in those groups, and I'm missing them all. But Facebook is such a time suck; there are worse things than not being able to get in. Sooner or later, I'll have to figure out the password thing and get back in. But I'm in no hurry.
