It has been a really poor year for Butterflies. In absolute numbers some survey areas are reporting a 50% decrease in numbers! However there have been some good days - my trip to Portland to look for Lulworth Skipper and other butterflies was really good, even if I timed it for the one really hot spell of the Summer. Another first this year was the Duke of Burgundy at Chapel bank in Surrey and later on in the season Brookwood did not disappoint when looking for Grayling. Overall though a combination of variable weather and a mild winter have meant that 2024 will not go down as the year of the Butterfly. Lets hope 2025 is better.
