I saw the movie Sing Sing recently.
It's about a group of inmates the Sing Sing maximum security prison that take part in the RTA program.
Rehabilitation Through the Arts.
The RTA is a program that uses theatre as a form of therapy and transformation.
While incarcerated, the inmates put on plays. And worked through some of their traumas and issues.
It's a good argument for the importance of art in our lives.
The movie is fiction, but most of the actors are former inmates. Former participants of the RTA.
If that's not an argument for the success of the program I don't know what is.
I didn't know much about the movie before going in. Just the recommendation that I should go see it.
Colman Domingo was excellent, as always.
But I was especially impressed with Clarence Maclin. He plays a version of himself. And you see the transformation from scary criminal into a more sensitive, positive person.
I highly recommend seeing the film.
