Cross Fit for the Mind

The Inner Coach

Cross Fit for the Mind

The Newsletter that Changes the Minds of High Performers

Plant Shelf

Last week we introduced the idea of the inner parental figure. This week let's talk a little bit more about the inner coach.

Your inner coach is the guardian of your potential. Only you truly know what you would like to do or what you might be capable of - if you are willing to take a risk.

The inner coach is going to be especially important in situations where everyone around you is not seeing the potential in you. Often friends and family help us to confirm something we already know deep inside ourselves but sometimes what they are saying is at odds with what we feel and we need our inner coach to spot the potential no one else can.

For example, when I was floating the idea of playing rugby, nobody, including my rugby-playing friends, thought it was a good idea. You're too old, it's too late, not worth the risk, etc., etc. But I fancied a go, and I knew I could do it, so I had to ignore everyone other than me and my inner coach.

This doesn't happen often, but we need to be ready with our inner coach when it does.

It was also useful in the process of learning, because no matter what a coach said to me I was always able to keep my own counsel which boosted my confidence massively. I might have been the most uncomfortable guy at training, but I was also probably the bravest and one of a few with a supportive inner coach.

What is your inner coach going to help you do that no-one else can?
