For Giving Tuesday, I wanted to give my readers an inside look at a charity centered around animals. Emily, who runs Campfire Critters and Willowdale Farm, rode at the same hunter/jumper barn that I did in high school. Her family ran a local campground, that happened to have the ability to house farm animals. One day, they got a call from the local animal control asking if they could take on a pig, which Emily agreed to, and then there was another pig. Soon enough various local animal controls learned that thy were accepting rescue farm animals.

The above events started in 2016, but soon it became abundantly clear that the animals needed their own dedicated sanctuary and organization, and the team began looking for a larger scale farm. Campfire Critters received their 501(c)3 non-profit status in 2020 and relocated from Hayes to Fredericksburg this year. They rescue and house all types of farm animals that currently includes, horses, donkeys, alpacas, llamas, goats, sheet, rabbits, cats, and pigs. Future goals of the sanctuary include rescuing pets such as dogs and indoor cats, with the possibility of adopting them out as well.

The work Campfire Critters does really inspires me. They've taken on a large group of horses from a kill pen lot recently, and while they are doing well and acclimating to the new farm, they would have had a much smaller chance of survival had Emily and her organization not stepped in to rescue them. However, there are a lot of needs when rescuing farm animals (us horse people know they are extremely expensive!). Currently, the organization is working on putting fencing up for the pigs, as well as repairing fencing to different pastures for the horses. The list never ends, so I wanted to let my readers know this giving Tuesday, how you might be able to donate to a cause that inspires me:

  1. Campfire Critters has a Chewy Wishlist here: https://www.chewy.com/g/campfire-critters-animal-sanctuary_b89666474
  2. They have a Clothing Fundraiser that will help pay for the pig fencing located here: https://www.customink.com/fundraising/ccas-clothing-fundraiser?side=front&type=3&zoom=false
  3. Here is their facebook page, where you can donate as well: www.facebook.com/campfirecritters
  4. You can donate directly on their website as well: https://www.campfirecrittersanimalsanctuary.com/how-you-can-help
  5. Eventually, they will be allowing volunteers to help with the animals and the fence building. I will plan on doing a follow-up post when I get the chance to go up there and visit and partake in the manual labor that is farm work!

If you have questions about Campfire Critters, or want to learn more, there is a contact us page on their website. I'm going to go donate some halters off of their Chewy Wish List now. I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving, and I am going to share the pets Christmas Wish Lists as my next blog!
