After having offcially wrapped up 2021 with the "My 2021 Reading Stats" article (which you can find here), it's time to start thinking about this year.
If you know me, you probably know I love challenges, goals and lists so much, because they help me with my anxiety, so of course I have lots of reading goals for the year. Will I be able to meet all of them? Probably not, but trying is enough for me. And, please remember if you don't set goals or don't follow through with them, that's perfectly fine. Reading should be fun and you don't have to do what other people do, if that's not for you. Personally, I really enjoy doing this kind of things, but they are not for everyone and you shouldn't push yourself, because you will end up hating your reading year. All that aside, let's start!
Goodreads Challenge As every year, I will set my Goodreads goal pretty low for my standards, because I don't wanna pressure myself too much. I will start with 50 books and once I will have read them, I will up it, depending on how far in the year we are. I'd love to read at least 150 books, but with my Master's degree and the following stage, I am not sure I will manage it. The fact that I will have a one hour commute every day makes me hope to get lots of reading done, because I love reading while on public transportation, so fingers crossed. I am also planning on subscribing to Storytel, so I will be able to read even when my eyes are tired.
Popsugar Challenge I have been doing this challenge since 2020, and I really love it, because it pushes me to read things I have been procrastinating or I wouldn't have picked up otherwise. Sometimes, I end up hating them, but it's pretty fun nonetheless, because I feel like after all these years of being a reader, sometimes I have to challenge myself to read outside my comfort zone. This year's prompts are pretty balanced, I would say, because some are really easy and some will be a little hard for me, but I am excited to try. I have already started fulfilling prompts and this year I want to try not to keep the hardest one to the end of the year.
The 52 Book Club Challenge New year, new challenge! I have never taken part in this one, but the prompts sounded fun and I wanted to try. I will be using the same books for this challenge and the Popsugar, if they fit a prompt, because otherwise I will go mad and will have to read 102 books just for these challenges. As with the Popsugar, the prompts are pretty balanced, I daresay these ones are even easier (she said, jinxing herself). I have already started with this one as well and I will be updating y'all in June, to see how things are going. Also, if you are planning on taking part in a reading challenge this year, I would recommend you start with this one, because as I said, the prompts are easier than the Popsugar's ones.
Alphabetical Challenge This is another challenge I have been doing for the past years and I really love finding books for some specific letters. If you don't know what this is, it is simply a challenge where you have to read a book for each letter of the alphabet, so the title has to start with that letter. Articles don't count (so, if you have "The Inheritance Games", it would count for I) and for X you just have to read a book which has an X in the title, not necessairily as the first letter. Usually, the hardest one is Z, but this year I have the perfect book. I won't tell you which one it is, because it will be in the "My 22 Most Anticipated Releases of 2022" article, which will be up after this one, so it's a secret.
22 Books for 2022 I have already done this challenge in 2020 and it really helped me to reduce my physical TBR. The challenge is really easy: you have to pick 22 books that are sitting on your shelves and you have to read them by the end of the year. I will be pairing this challenge with a general goal of reducing my physical TBR; mostly, I won't be buying books unless if I have already read them either on ebook or on audiobook and I also will be trying to read at least 2 books I physically own each month. I don't know if I will be able to do that, because I also have all the other challenges to do, but that's the goal. I have made a spreadsheet with all my unread books, comics and mangas, so it will be more satisfying reading them, because once I have finished a book, I can cross it off the list, which is something I love to do.
Read at least 12 new releases and 12 classics I always say I want to read more new releases and more classics I have on my TBR, but I don't usually really do that. I have read quite a lot of new releases in 2021, I think, but I decided to write this down as a goal for the year, just so I don't forget. I will be also trying to read all my most anticipated releases of the year, but we all know I can't keep up with them. As for the classics, I have a lot of them I want to read, but for one reason or the other, I always procrastinate reading them. First of all, I am going to read the ones I own but haven't gotten to yet, but then I have a lot I still have to buy, but really want to read. The first three I am reading in January are Mrs Dalloway, The Great Gatsby and Sense and Sensibility, but I wanto to ask my Instagram followers to help me decide some others I really have to read in their opinion and maybe write an article about them! Follow me @lapetitepritt, if you want to vote and help me pick my next nine classics reads.
Buzzwordathon 2022 (@booksandlala) If you want to learn more about this challenge, I highly recommend you check out this video by Kayla from @booksandlala made to announce the challenges for 2022. I will be taking this challenge as a "read at least one book with the buzzword in the title each month", without strictly sticking to the dates. I believe the prompts are pretty manageable and for January I am going with How To Kill Your Family. My other goal would be to read only mystery/thriller/horror books for this specific challenge, since these are the genres I mostly follow Kayla for. I don't know if I'll actually manage, but that's the plan.
Get better at keeping up with ARCs and finish all the backlist ones I still have This is my last official goal for 2022. In the past month, I have read a lot of backlist titles I had requested an e-ARC for, but I still have four to get to and one 2022 release to read. I want to get better at reading the ARCs I request, before requesting more. By June, I want to have read all of the ones I have (except for Kingdom of the Wicked, because I have to read it with Juls and I have to wait for when Juls wants to read it), so fingers crossed. I know I will be requesting more in the next few months, but I want to be on top of everything.
These are the official goals, but I also have some unofficial ones, such as reading more sapphic books! I want to read more thrillers as well and I would love to be able to find some more mystery-thrillers by POC authors, because I feel like they don't get the same hype as other does, but I really want to get better at finding them. Another thing I want to do is read more books for specific articles I want to write, because I always procrastinate, but I want to bring you some fun content in 2022, so I hope you stick around.
That's all for today, we will check in by midyear to see how I am doing with my reading, but for now wish me luck and we'll talk soon!
