Jim Adams' Song Lyric Sunday gives us the chance to share familiar, and sometimes not so familiar, songs. This week the prompt is to find a song that mentions rain.
If you fancy sharing one of your favourite songs you can find out how to participate, and also listen to all the great entries, here.
"Africa" is a song by American rock band Toto, the tenth and final track on their fourth studio album Toto IV (1982). It was released as a single in the US through Columbia Records in October 1982, the album's third single overall and second in Europe. The song was written by band members David Paich and Jeff Porcaro, produced by the band, and mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Elliot Scheiner.
Toto were formed in LA in the late 70's by a group of friends who were all much in demand session musicians. They went on to epitomise the classic American pop/rock sound of the 80's and 90's with hit albums and singles including Hold The Line, Africa, I Won't Hold You Back and the multi-Grammy winning Rosanna.
Here they are with a fantastic version of Africa, played live In Amsterdam, in front of a fanatical crowd, in 2003, during the world tour in support of their album "Through The Looking Glass".
I hear the drums echoing tonight But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation She's coming in, 12:30 flight The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation I stopped an old man along the way Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies He turned to me as if to say "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you"
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (ooh, ooh)
The wild dogs cry out in the night As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company I know that I must do what's right As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (ooh, ooh)
Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa I bless the rains down in Africa (I bless the rain) I bless the rains down in Africa I bless the rains down in Africa I bless the rains down in Africa (Gonna take the time) Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (ooh, ooh)
Here is a live recording of the school-concert "Music at the Cusanus", performed on June 12. and 13./ 2014 at the cityhall of Erkelenz by the Cusanus- Student-Choir, conducted by Michael Forg. Just look at the anticipation in the ladies faces as they wait to join in. They are so enthusiastic!
And, finally, a performance by Angel City Chorale with soloists Rich Kennedy, Tommy Lamb, Tina Mitro, and Duff Watrous. Listen to the representation of "The rain in Africa". It truly is amazing! If there was ever an advert for the joys of singing in a choir this has to be it!
