Just a quick update on things...everything changes so quickly sometimes in foster land.
I think Rebecca may have some mastitis, or at the very least, her teats are very raw and sore and she does not want to nurse the kittens. And feeding them by syringe isn't going great either, so tonight I put the petal to the metal on weaning them. They got a bowl of food this evening, a slurry of kitten milk replacer and the Mother and Baby Cat Mousse that I start kittens on, and much to my surprise they went to town on it.
It usually takes several tries to get them to try the slurry but not this gang. The best news was the the smallest kitten, who is half the weight she should be, planted herself in the bowl and chowed down. She weighed 20 grams more when she was done eating, the first weight gain in several days. Phew!!! I will be feeding them every few hours so mom doesn't need to nurse them anymore. She still has the diarrhea and is absorbing fluids like crazy when she gets them. She needs not to have to deal with the little hooligans anymore. If I had another room to put her in, I'd do that right now. But as it is, she stays out of the kitten enclosure for the most part, and if I can feed the little beasts enough, maybe they won't beg her to nurse. I'm not sure she actually has much milk in her anyway.
The other news of the evening is that Ace arrived, and he's adorable and very nice.
He's low key, doesn't care at all about the cats, super people and dog friendly but not annoying Bodhi or Gracie. He could lose 5 pounds without any problem, and we'll work on that a bit. He barks a little bit, but not for more than a minute, unlike some of our previous foster dogs who could bark for hours at a time. He may need a dental...will see what the vet says when we see her on Wednesday next week. But my first impression is that this dog is very adoptable. I heard from one person this evening, who had heard about him, who is interested in adopting him. I don't think he'll be with us too long.
The Donald Duck gang got their second distempers today, and I have approved applications on 3/4 of them. They get neutered 6/3, and hopefully all will go home 6/5, and that would give me space to separate momma from her kittens so she can get dried out, spayed, and hopefully off to a home of her own.
As I wrote yesterday, there's always something, but it is nice when some of the somethings are good somethings.
