First lets clarify what a cetacean is, A cetacean is an animals such as a porpoise, dolphin or whale and In Tenerife I was lucky enough to see four different species of dolphin and two species of whale.
Taking a camera on a boat is always going to be a risky business but luckily we had no mishaps and all of my cameras (Nikon D3500 with 70-300mm lens, Go-Pro and camcorder) made it back to Wales in one piece.
There were a few things that made photographing cetaceans and other marine life very difficult, the first being the boat keeps moving, we had a few nice days where the ocean itself was pretty flat and then we had days where the waves rocked us about and these were the days some of our group started to regret drinking the night before!

Aside from the motion of the boat another issue was how fast these creatures are, they are very playful and move from either side of the boat very quickly, this meant that when an animal would breach (to breathe) the photos would mostly be of fins as the animal disappeared back into the dark blue water.
Problems encountered on the tourist boat were mostly the tourists, as we were part of the foundation we were able to go on the tourist boats to collect data on the cetaceans and help out the crew where necessary. But this meant there were more people to get in the way as everyone wanted to see the animals they had paid to see.
Considering I was in Tenerife for two weeks I did not actually spend that much time out on the boats but I am happy with the amount of marine life I got to see overall!
