A walk through Rochester

After Keith and I had visited Gaia (See Tuesday's post), we went for a walk around Rochester. Our first stop was the remains of the cloister of the Benedictine monastery once attached to the Cathedral.

Then we walked past the Castle

From here we passed The Coopers Arms, one of the oldest pubs in Rochester and continued through the vines, now a park but once the monastery's vineyard, to Restoration House, so called because it is believed that Charles II stayed there on his way back to London from exile following the restoration of the monarchy in May 1660. The back to the High Street and Eastgate House. a 16th century town house. In the gardens is the chalet, taken from Charles Dickens Home nearby, where the writer wrote many of his books.

From here we made our way to the riverfront, which is the scene of intense development with luxury housing blocks spring up, all with wonderful views of the river (and the docks opposite!). Still they are very close to the railway station and that seems to be a major consideration in choosing where to live these days.

From here we made our way back to the rail station and the end of our walk.
