Lagotto Romagnolo translates to "lake dogs from Romagna." Also called Italian/Romagna Water Dogs, they used to hunt waterfowl in Romagna, Italy. Eventually, these pups grew to become truffle hunters as several marshlands in Romagna drained. With that, they can easily get trained to do scent work. In addition, their thick coats are an essential tool to protect them from debris/thorns in the forest, as well as to keep them warm during the fall/winter season.
Nowadays, Lagotto Romagnolo dogs are the only dogs that are specifically designed to become truffle hunters. They have a strong smelling sense, and they tend to dig a lot— traits that are perfect for the task. In addition to that, these dogs can also be active, easygoing, and affectionate family members who do not have too many demands. They also have hypoallergenic coats, perfect for allergic people. Take note, though, that their coats still need maintenance. With enough brushing/grooming, Lagotto Romagnolo dogs are easily-trained companions, truffle hunters, and family dogs.
