Did you know that Jamaica's only Children's Hospital (currently - I believe a second is under construction in western Jamaica) is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year?
Did you know that the Bustamante Hospital for Children's Ambassador for the celebrations is a former patient, medal-winning discus thrower and national record holder Fedrick Dacres? Both Dacres and fellow Jamaican Travis Smikle qualified for the finals at the just-concluded World Athletics Championship in Budapest. Dacres, up against those powerful Europeans, finished in a very creditable fifth position. Well done!
The 29-year-old former Calabar High School student has had some injuries, but has overcome them. I think he can relate to the whole issue of healing. Thank you for your support, Fedrick!
Congratulations to Fedrick Dacres, Ambassador for the Bustamante Hospital for Children's 60th Anniversary!
KINGSTON, Jamaica. Friday, August 24, 2023: Jamaican Discus Olympian, Fedrick Dacres has reached yet another milestone in his career after competing in the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Dacres, who is also an ambassador for the Bustamante Hospital for Children's (BHC) 60th Anniversary celebrations and co-captain of the team, has made Jamaica proud in the final of the men's discus event.
The world silver medallist and Commonwealth Games champion gave praise to the medical staff of BHC for providing quality care for his fractured hand after he fell from a weak tree at the age of nine. "Lifting things with my left hand, which is the hand that was broken, is the stronger hand, and it did not hinder me in any way throughout my career, so thanks to the team at BHC," Dacres said in a patient testimonial video to commemorate the 60th anniversary of BHC.
Dacres has won numerous medals at the youth and senior levels internationally. He currently holds a national record of 70.78m.
BHC is dedicated to providing world-class paediatric health care services for children, especially to athletes like Dacres, who is destined to represent Jamaica at the highest level. With his commitment and talent, the BHC family is confident he will continue to excel and make BHC and Jamaica proud in future competitions.
"The staff and management at BHC are incredibly proud of our 60th Anniversary ambassador, Fedrick Dacres, for his efforts and achievements in the 2023 IAAF World Championships in Budapest. He exemplifies the hard work and sacrifice that all athletes expend to realize their dreams", said Dr. Brian James, Chairperson for the BHC 60th Anniversary committee.
Officially opened in November 1963, the facility operates as the only specialist paediatric hospital in the English-speaking Caribbean.
