People Suck

Why is it on the days I'm at my lowest, you normies always find a way to kick me when I'm down?

Yesterday Little Girl and Miss Biddy had follow-up vet visits. Miss Biddy was very sick last week and almost died, but a vet at the clinic stepped in when my regular vet wasn't available. Because of her, Biddy is alive and well.

Little Girl, however, has gotten worse. She's not throwing up and her weight is stable, thanks to steroids and lots of Churus (and thanks to Chewy for having them on sale last week). But her intestines looked worse, and the vet tech said she was honestly surprised Little Girl was keeping anything down. I know it won't be much longer.

Little Girl, a black cat with a tipped left ear, looking up at the photographer.

I cried all afternoon while I worked, then pulled myself together to do some gig work, because death is inevitable but not free, and capitalism pities no one.

I got a decent-paying gig shopping for a customer at the local Aldi. I hadn't been in the store 5 minutes when an employee yelled at me for digging for items, like everyone does in Aldi because that's how they stock their shelves. And it wasn't just that the employee thought it was ok to publicly attack me, but that everyone stared yet no one stepped up to offer support. No store employee. No customer. They were complicit in their silence, and looked at me like I must have deserved to have been treated that way.

And it that wasn't bad enough, the damn customer clawed much of my tip back.

People suck.

And yet, there are also people in this world like Vickie, the palliative care vet tech who gave me her personal cell phone number and told me when the time comes to say good-bye to Little Girl, she could arrange for the vet to come to my home for the euthanasia. Vickie also has terminal cancer, and I was touched that with all that's going on in her life, she cared enough to be there for Little Girl and me.

Miss Biddy, a petite black cat, sitting on the arm of a chair.

Or the customer I delivered to who remembered I enjoy gardening, so when she cleaned out her garage she saved some raised bed planters to give me the next time I shopped for her. I was thrilled when she offered them.

It's sad that there are so few people like this in the world, and so many who are cruel and cowardly.

I'm just grateful there are any kind people at all.
