Tomorrow's Halloween! π And with October coming to an end this week, it means we get another new Watercolor of the Month that's coming up on The Autistic Animator's Desk. So, put on your scary costumes and grab yourselves some candy and caramel apples, because you're going to be checking out the 56th Watercolor of the Month.
Because Halloween is tomorrow, of course you're going to be revisiting a Halloween watercolor art piece from the past, and it's pretty crazy to know that it's already the fifty-sixth post. And so, the drawing I have chosen to be the 56th Watercolor of the Month for October 2023 is The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror fan art of Count Burns from last year. Excellent!
This became the very first full fan artwork of Count Burns, as well as the very first fan art piece for Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror, done back in 2022, and posted it on October 25th, six days before Halloween. But going back to the beginning, way before doing this project, I did were a couple of drawings of Count Burns for Inktober challenge back in 2020. Both of these drawings were drawn with pencil in a light sketch but traced with a black sharpie pen on a printed-copy paper. They are available to see in the actual topic from three years ago, which you can find and check it out on this blog here.
You can definitely say that Mr. Burns, the owner of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, as a vampire is one of the iconic Treehouse of Horror short in the history of The Simpsons. It's taken from the last segment of the Treehouse of Horror IV from Season 5, titled 'Bart Simpson's 'Dracula'', which the short is a parody of the horror film, Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) that stars Gary Oldman as Count Dracula, and of course, Mr. Burns plays the role and wears the iconic Dracula costume. He even gets the fangs! "So sharp you won't feel a thing", to quote the Other Father from Laika's Coraline (2009) π±
It's one of my favorite Treehouse of Horror shorts, but if someone asks me if I have to pick and choose a favorite Treehouse of Horror Halloween short of all time, which one would I choose? For me, it has to be this one! It's very funny, the animation is great, and the jokes are hilarious. It's definitely one of Mr. Burns' iconic moments of all of The Simpsons episodes, and it makes sense to have him being a Count Dracula vampire, because he's one of the villains of the show. Mr. Burns is one of my favorite Simpsons characters of all time, voiced by Harry Shearer.
It was one of the most fun watercolor drawing projects I ever worked on, even one of the great, fun Halloween art projects I worked on back in 2022. Of course, Mr. Burns can be so fun to draw.
I worked on starting the project on a Sunday afternoon with using the pencil to lightly sketch the entire thing, both for the character and background layout, based on Dracula's castle from the classic 1992 film. After sketching, I traced the outlines to do the clean-up process for both Count Burns and the interior of the castle background layout. Also, can't forget to add the giant shadow floating around the castle, which that was taken from the 1992 film. One Thursday morning, I begin with the painting process, starting with Count Burns to paint him in full color with the watercolor pencil sets. Next, the background gets painted. From what I wrote in the actual post of this artwork, I mentioned about the interior of the castle was done in gray, but what I did for this fan art was making into purple to create a spooky Halloween-y look. Of course, I did use a screenshot image of the scene from the episode as reference to put it into the drawing. And the final process was painting Count Burns' shadow, using black acrylic paint to paint it into watercolor medium, until it was finally finished on October 11th, 2022.
If you would like to read the full topic of this Simpsons Halloween fan art, you can check it out in the link down below. Also, if you haven't seen the Young Frankenstein watercolor fan art of my favorite character, Igor ('Eye-Gor'), please check it out here at The Autistic Animator's Desk.
I wish you all a very Happy Halloween! ππ¦π»π¬
