When I was five years old I wanted to fly space ships- in a pinch I thought I'd settle for being the Captain of my very own Pirate ship.
But I was firm.
I wanted to be the Captain of my own ship.
Before I was 8 years old reality came crashing down on my head.
I was told that people were going to fly to places like Mars and beyond, women were going to be Captains of their own ships ( even though in 1969, when I was five years old women couldn't open their own banking or checking accounts unless their husband's signed off on it ) because anything was possible in THE FUTURE.
But I wasn't going to be one of those women. Special, bright, and exceptional people did the things I dreamed about.
And guess what.
It turned out that those people who told me I was being " silly " were right.
I never did anything 'special'.
So I write about monsters and pirates and flying space ships and nobody has stopped me from doing that.
