I have never understood some people's disgust or discomfort with public breastfeeding.
It's natural.
It's beautiful.
It's amazing.
A mother can feed their child with their own body. Awesome!
Most humans throughout history were breastfed. It's normal.
There's nothing obscene about it.
And it's not sexual. For goodness sakes.
It's one of those weird North American oddities. This discomfort with breastfeeding.
I remember being in Zagreb in 1985. I was doing the Europe thing after University. And there was a statue of a mother breastfeeding her child.
The statue mesmerized me.
You'd never see something like that where I came from.
But that bond between mother and child… I can't articulate why it's so cool.
I imagine the child gets this incredible double whammy of all the good stuff. Besides being fed, they are close to the person that loves them. Physically close. Emotionally close.
You will never feel as safe and as loved as when you were sucking on the boob. Even though you don't remember it.
Another thing that struck me from my Europe trip? There were statues of Mary breastfeeding the baby Jesus! Holy Moley!!
That definitely wouldn't go over in North America. But why not?
Of course, Mary would have breast fed little baby Jesus.
We tolerate a lot of crazy things in North America.
So, why all the intolerance for public breastfeeding?
