While at the cottage, Deb and I sleep in a bedroom with two twin beds. That's our usual bedroom.
It's upstairs and close to the bathroom.
There's another bedroom upstairs, and it has a queen size bed. But that's my cousin's bedroom.
And there's a bedroom downstairs with a queen size bed. But there's no bathroom down there.
Neither Deb nor I want to navigate the stairs when we go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
So, we're happy to sleep separately for a few days.
But Keaton was surprised when he went into our bedroom and saw the twin beds.
"Don't you guys want to sleep in the same bed?" he asked.
Feeling mischievous, I said, "Your mom and I have been meaning to tell you guys something. We haven't been sleeping together for a while. We're going to be splitting up…"
Poor Keaton's face!
I laughed and told him that I was kidding.
He didn't think it was funny.
And then he told me that the parents of one of his friends are splitting up.
It was a complete shock to their kids.
So, my joke hit a little too close to home.
Oops.
I apologized again.
Sometimes things are funnier in your head than they are when you say them out loud.
