It's well known amongst my family and friends that I have trouble keeping a straight face.
My acting buddies from school frequently ask me to "give attitude". Because when I try to be serious, I break out into a stupid grin.
This can be a problem when performing a comic play.
Funny lines and funny situations crack me up.
That's why rehearsals are so important to me.
Not only to learn my lines.
Not only to get my blocking down.
Not only build my relationships with my fellow actors.
But to get my laughies out.
I've got to get those chuckles and snickers out of the way!
Some of the lines in The Game's Afoot just crack me up!
I've got to listen to them over and over to serve as an inoculation to the comedy.
To strengthen my "don't-laugh" muscles.
It's not easy.
I must fully inhabit the world of the character that I'm portraying so that I don't "see" the comedy.
Which is harder than it sounds because the funny stuff can be hilarious! In this play, anyway.
Being focused on the character is the key. And I think that I'm getting better at it.
But you never know when the laughies will strike, so I'm hoping to get them all out of my system in the coming weeks!
