Although most days, it still doesn't feel like fall, there are some noticeable changes. First and foremost, Willy is growing a coat. I had the discussion with my trainer this past week about the possible need for him to be clipped this fall/winter (we managed to get away with no clip jobs last winter) because he is in so much work. I am not looking forward to managing a clip job, but he will be much happier and less sweaty for it. If anyone would like me to do a blog post about why we clip horses, and the differences for dogs versus horses regarding coats during hot months, let me know and I can do some extra research for something like that, I frankly only know the basics.
We are preparing for Halloween as well. T said Bowser wants to have a costume this year. I'm not sure he would tolerate one, but if we do pirates, he could be a little parrot or monkey!
The grass is starting to die off slowly as well. If you're in SE Virginia and are thinking of planting a winter grass, I know that a winter rye is highly recommended, and seeding times should be around about now!
On the saddle front, nothing yet. I don't desperately need a saddle yet, and I probably shouldn't rush into getting one right before the Holidays, but if I do happen to get enough pet sitting business, I could justify the purchase. I would really love to swing it before Willy leaves for Aiken in February, which seems so far away, but it really isn't. The days are long but the months are short. Let's appreciate Fall while it is here! It's definitely already better than the unbearable heat of the summer, although it is particularly humid today.
It was Safety Awareness Week this past week (Helmet and Vests) and while I did not make any purchases, I did add some items to my birthday/Christmas wish lists. It's possible I might do a little wish list writeup right before my birthday, just so you all know what I think are intriguing. But regarding safety awareness, when I was 10 years old I fell off a pony after a jump and went head first into a standard. I got back on the pony and continued with my lesson. When I went home, my head started hurting, and my mom took me to the doctor, where I proceeded to throw up. I was put on an ambulance and rushed to the nearest ER with appropriate CT machines and was officially diagnosed with a severe concussion. Without a helmet on, there would have been untold damage, so I am a huge proponent of always wearing a helmet while riding. I have never done anything cross country (yet), but I am eyeing some vests here soon, because I think there might be an opportunity when Willy is in Aiken. Fingers crossed! I want his trainer to take him a few times first, though. If you can't tell, I am excited for Willy to go to Aiken.
T and I are preparing to go to Disney in November, which will be a good time. I do need to work on putting up more media, whether that is dogs, cat, or some of Willy. I will make an effort!
