From the ancient haikus of Basho to the contemporary verses of Ada Limón, flowers have, and always will be, a cherished muse for poets. They appear as symbols of fleeting beauty, carriers of emotion, and metaphors for life’s complexities. As I wrote the poem Flowers in Winter today, I wondered why flowers ignite the poet’s imagination. Why do these delicate, ephemeral plants inspire endless streams of verse? Ephemeral BeautyThe transient nature of flowers makes them a perfect metaphor for the fleeting moments of life. Their bloom is a celebration of vitality, but it is also a poignant reminder of impermanence. The cherry blossom, for instance, has inspired countless Japanese poems, embodying the bittersweet balance between beauty and mortality. This delicate duality resonates deeply with poets, who often explore the impermanence of human experiences and relationships in their work. Universal SymbolsFlowers have an innate ability to convey meaning without words. Red roses speak of passion, lilies of purity, and daisies of innocence. This rich symbolism provides poets with a language that transcends cultural boundaries, allowing them to weave universal themes into their verses. The symbolism of flowers also evolves with the times; for example, the modern use of wildflowers often conveys resilience and individuality, reflecting contemporary values. Sensory AppealPoets thrive on sensory detail, and flowers are a feast for the senses. Their vibrant colors, intricate shapes, and intoxicating fragrances create vivid imagery that lends itself to poetry. The tactile softness of petals or the dew glistening in the morning light can evoke emotions that words alone struggle to capture. Connection to NatureFlowers anchor poets to the natural world. In an increasingly conflicted, skyscraper, digital, and pandemic age, they remind us of the simplicity and wonder of the earth. Poets like Mary Oliver and Rumi use flowers as a portal to explore themes of spirituality, interconnectedness, and the profound joy found in nature’s quiet moments. A Mirror for Human EmotionFlowers often reflect the human condition. A solitary bloom can symbolize hope in despair; a wilting petal can signify loss or longing. My website A Flower Expected Everywhere, inspired by poet e. e. cummings, is based upon the theme often mirrored by flowers thriving in unlikely places, such as in cracks in the concrete pavement or in barren fields. They represent endurance in difficulties, overcoming the impossible, and hope. Aesthetic InspirationThere is an undeniable aesthetic allure to flowers. From the intricate details of an iris to the cheerful simplicity of a sunflower, their natural artistry captivates poets. Artists like Monet found inspiration in flowers for their visual compositions, while poets use them to create lyrical landscapes that stir the soul. Timeless ThemesFlowers embody timeless themes: love, loss, renewal, and transformation. The recurring cycles of blooming and withering parallel the rhythms of human life. This universality ensures that flowers remain relevant as metaphors, no matter the era or poetic style. In the end, poets are drawn to flowers because they are more than just plants; they are storytellers of the natural world. Their brief lives echo the transient beauty of our own existence, offering moments of clarity and connection that inspire poetry. Like a flower unfolding to the sun, poetry blooms in their presence, making them an eternal source of inspiration. Photographer: Martina Nicolls Can’t see the whole article? MAKING MY PEACE … with gaining ground in 2025
MAKING MY PEACE … with gaining ground in 2025A journey rooted in patience and perseverance ...
As 2025 begins, I embrace grounded energy, guided by ancient wisdom, meditation, and intuitive divination. The year brings, for me, movement forward through a steady, inspired, and creative path. Here, I reflect on how these insights converge for growth, resilience, and quiet triumph. The Tortoise: Slow and SteadyThe tortoise reminds me that patience is not a weakness but a strength. Its steady pace and unshakable focus teach me to value persistence over haste. As I prepare for a charity run in September, the tortoise indicates that every small step matters. The journey is as important as the destination, and progress will be made in consistent, deliberate strides, keeping the end in sight. The Emu: Forward MomentumThe emu, an Australian flightless bird of swift, purposeful movement, contrasts beautifully with the tortoise. The emu’s energy, as it zig-zags across the dusty earth, is a reminder ofconfidence in moving forward, to go far, even when the path is uncertain. It’s a call to trust my instincts and take courageous steps toward my aspirations. The Rabbit: Creative IdeasThe rabbit, a symbol of creativity, encourages me to nurture my ideas and imaginations, and to move forward with my writing projects. It also serves as a reminder to face challenges, transforming them into opportunities for growth. The Eagle: Perspective and VisionThe eagle, soaring high above on the rising air currents, offers perspective and vision. It invites me to rise above the mundane and see the bigger picture. The eagle’s wisdom empowers me to stay focused on my goals, with an eagle-eye, to guide my path with fewer distractions. Centering in TruthIn my quietude, I sought guidance and heard the words “centering in truth" which guides me to deepen this year’s theme of movement forward with authenticity and alignment. It calls me to trust my intuition and to connect deeply with others. This wisdom encourages me to listen. Listen to myself, to the rhythms of the world, and to the voices of those around me. In meditative thought, I was shown a narrow, winding path through gently rolling green hills. The layered perspectives of new beginnings urges me to approach life with curiosity and an open heart. Although I was shown the long route, it speaks of endurance and an understanding that meaningful journeys require time. It reinforces the importance of patience and perseverance. A Gentle Path ForwardAs I step into 2025, I reflect on the connection between patience and perseverance – qualities that shape meaningful journeys inspired by the timeless wisdom of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Frodo’s quest is a classic example of a long, arduous journey that is deeply personal, reminding me that the steady, often winding path is one of strength and resilience. Much like the Olympic rings of Paris 2024, which symbolize unity, perseverance, and striving for excellence, my journey this year will be rooted in movement – gentle yet bold, deliberate yet inspired. Both Tolkien and the Olympics draw parallels between the Fellowship of the Ring and collaborative team spirit in which the journey is individual but teams are vital to overcome challenges. The value lies not just in reaching the endpoint but in how the journey shapes character. As I weave these insights together to provide a plan for 2025, the path forward will be a year of grounded, yet purposeful, growth, navigating challenges with grace to find joy in the journey. This year, I will not just be gaining ground. Whether through the patient steps of a tortoise, the swift strides of an emu, or the soaring perspective of an eagle, I embrace this year as an unfolding adventure, where every small step forward contributes to a greater story of growth, resilience, and quiet triumph. Making my peace with gaining ground in 2025, I will do the following: Acknowledge the successes of 2024 and learn from the challenges Focus on movement – gentle and steady, but bold and purposeful Include different forms of movement in my life – from running to walking; dancing to swaying, and calming exercise routines Travel somewhere, new or unknown, near or far Enhance my creativity and artistic expression through writing and painting Experience more walking meditations through rolling hills no matter how long the route Can’t see the whole article?
