Cross Fit for the Mind

What are you afraid of?

Cross Fit for the Mind

The Newsletter that Changes the Minds of High Performers

What are you afraid of? Think of at least one big thing and one small thing that you are afraid of.

I'll give you some of my most recent examples. I'm afraid of asking for exactly what I want in a restaurant. Anything that would come across as me being awkward or difficult. Last March, I was in a hotel in Manchester airport waiting for a flight home the next day. I wanted the burger but instead of the skinny fries that come with it, I wanted the cheese and chorizo fries from a different section of the menu.

I had to ask for this, watch the waiters awkward pause (which makes me more awkward), wait for him to check with his manager and then explain it would cost me an extra 3 quid and boom, 20-minutes later I had exactly what I wanted.

My wife would not bat an eyelid doing that, in fact she has no problem asking for things that are not even on the menu (I'll never be that good, but I'm ok with that). She would be more afraid of her husband writing about her in his newsletter.

Recently someone in a coffee shop poured a litre of milk into my coffee when I asked for a drop. I asked for another one. I know, I'm such a rebel, right?!

Big things. I was afraid to enter an open wrestling competition as part of the highland games when I was in Scotland on holiday. Going in against Scottish lads in their kilts trying to throw each other to the ground. Anyway, I did it. The elation afterwards was something I'll never forget even though I only won 1 round out of about 10.

I began this newsletter 3-weeks ago by saying there would be less reps but more discomfort, see what I mean?! Asking for those chips or taking part in that competition occupied no more than 20-minutes of my life but on some level it has changed me permanently and for the better.
