Do you have a core sense of self? In this context, I define a core sense of self as an awareness of what you like doing for it's own sake. What you like doing even when no one else is watching.
Up until 3 or 4 years ago I could not give that question any form of solid answer. Why? Because I had defined myself in relation to other people. I tended to tag a long with things I was half interested in, in order to be able to do it with old friends rather than exploring what it is I might like to do.
This caused me a lot of problems in many areas of life ranging from the absence of mutually satisfying friendships to difficulties in romantic relationships.
To connect with other people in a satisfying way, you need to know who you are. This allows you to be authentic and draw in like-minded folk. PLUs as we called them in a previous newsletter.
I like rugby, surfing, reading, camping, BBQing outside in my barefeet, a good morning coffee, a deep and meaningful conversation, small groups, rest periods, routine, the gym, an ice cold pint of Guinness after a long surf, Mick Flannery singing live in Kenny's bar, a sauna in the middle of winter.
What do you like? Next week, we'll talk about why it's important to know.
Enjoying the newsletter and want a friend to sign up and answer the questions/prompts with you? You can send them this link to sign up.
