Southwood Rd. Olympians

We used to filch my mother's
World War II silk scarves
string up their corners
attach some random fishing weights
turn them into parachutes
toss them out the attic window
and race down the stairs
bolt out the door
to the side lawn
hoping to catch them
before they landed.

Sometimes we did.
But only rarely.

We used to do the same thing
with snowflakes:
We tried (and usually failed)
to catch them on our tongues.
Of course, we didn't make the snowflakes.
(I guess that goes without saying.)

And don't get me started
about the dandelions.
