For me, November is very much a time for reflection. During the month, many conservation organisations I am associated with have annual meetings. in the past couple of weeks, it has been Butterfly Conservation and the British Dragonfly Society and in another week's time, it will be the British Trust for Ornithology. All of these organisations are actively involved in practical conservation as well as running the various monitoring schemes which are used to gather information on the state of wildlife in our country.
The meetings have many inputs, from reports on the results of monitoring schemes to new conservation activities to promote, or at least halt the decline, of selected species in a selected area, to improving habitat, through to highly scientific studies looking at factors in the success, more decline, of individual species. They enable those of us who provide the monitoring information to see how that is being used and encourage us to continue our efforts in the new year. I certainly got some good ideas about places I want to visit next year when I have decided my focus will be on monitoring invertebrates.
