My 23 Most Anticipated 2023 Releases

Hello, bookworms!

Happy Saturday, I hope you are reading something good this weekend. I am currently reading The Last Firefox by Lee Newbery and a few other things I am going to review soon.

Anyways, today I am here to talk about my 23 Most Anticipated Releases of 2023; I am not going to include Lost in the Moment and Found by Seanan McGuire and This Book Kills by Ravena Guron, because I read them last year and they were both on my best books list. I am going to write the release date next to each title, but they could be wrong or could change, so don't quote me on that. If you know the right ones, please do tell me and I'll switch.

☽ Camp Creepy by Kiersten White (Jan 3rd)
This actually came out this week, but I still have to buy and read it. It's the third book in the Sinister Summer series, which I have fallen in love with in 2022. I can't wait to follow the twins and their sister in yet another creepy adventure, and I'll hopefully read this soon.

☽ Heartstopper, vol. 5 by Alice Oseman (Feb?)
According to Goodreads, the last instalment of the series is supposed to come out in February. According to me, it's not going to happen and we will have to wait at least until September, but we will see. Whenever it comes out, I'll be ready to cry my heart out.

☽ Olympic Enemies by Rebecca J. Caffrey (Feb 4th)
Now, you may know from some of my intros, but aside from books, one of my biggest passions is artistic gymnastics. So, of course the queer rivals to lovers gymnastics book is on my most anticipated list. I want to read it as soon as it releases and scream forever.

☽ Juniper Harvey and the Kingdom of Vanishing by Nina Varela (Feb 14th)
Back in 2020 I read Crier's War, and even though I did not like it enough to read the sequel, I have been keeping an eye out for Varela's next book. When I saw she was coming out with a queer MG inspired by Pygmalion and Galatea I screamed and had to add it to my list.

☽ The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi (Feb 14th)
I have read and loved two books by Roshani Chokshi next year, one middle grade and one young adult. This is her adult debut and it's supposed to be a Gothic story about fairytales and storytelling. I have an e-ARC and plan on reading it soon, fingers crossed I'll love it!

☽ Ander & Santi Were Here by Jonny Garza Villa (April 4th)
I'm not gonna lie, this one was a total cover bait. The art is so stunning it makes me wanna have it as a giant print on my wall. The plot also sounds amazing, by the way, and I think it will make me reflect and learn a lot about a topic I'm not familiar with, so can't wait.

☽ Drew LeClair Crushes the Case by Katryn Bury (April 18th)
Last year, by chance, I stumbled upon Drew LeClair Gets a Clue, a hidden gem of a middle grade mystery with a queer lead, and when I discovered it was going to be a series, I could not have been happier. I can't wait to follow Drew while she crushes this new case.

☽ Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli (May 2nd)
The day I'll have this book in my hands is going to be the day I finally ascend to a superior plan of existance. Becky Albertalli is one of my favourite authors and every year that has a new book from her is a good year. This sounds amazing and I'd sell my soul for an ARC.

☽ Ellie Engle Saves Herself by Leah Johnson (May 2nd)
A queer middle grade by the author of one of my favourite books ever (You Should See Me in a Crown)? Sign me the fuck up. I honestly don't remember the plot of this one, I added it in the blink of an eye, even before it had a cover or a title. That's how stoked I am.

☽ The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan, Mark Oshiro (May 2nd)
May 2nd is going to be a great day for the gays. I think I will cry before even opening this book. I cannot even begin to explain how much Nico Di Angelo means to me and the fact that we are going to get a book about him and Will fills me with dread and joy.

☽ Menacing Manor by Kiersten White (May 2nd)
Yes, this is indeed the second to last book in the Sinister Summer series and nothing is going to stop me from putting both book three and four on this list. Nothing. The fact that after this one we will only have one book left is very Prittphobic, but I'll accept it. Maybe.

☽ You Don't Have a Shot by Racquel Marie (May 9th)
Have I read Ophelia After All after having said so around 100 times? Of course not, but I am still including this on the list, because it's a sapphic sports romance with the rivals to lovers trope. I mean, that's basically my personality summed up in a book description.

☽ The Luis Ortega Survival Club by Sonora Reyes (May 23rd)
This is the author of one of my top 3 books of 2022, and their upcoming release sounds just as interesting and compelling. It features an autistic main character — which I need to read more of — and it deals with sexual abuse and harrasment, so it's extremely necessary.

☽ Yellowface by Rebecca Kuang (May 25th)
I was almost forgetting to put this on the list, because I have actually already read it and I will be posting my review next week, but I cannot not include whatever Kuang comes out with each year, as I have loved The Poppy War and Babel. Stay tuned for the review.

☽ The Grimoire of Grave Fates edited by Hanna Alkaf (Jun 6th)
I have been waiting for this book for ages (GR listed it as a 2022 release, and if you check my post last year you'll find it there) because it's a dark academia anthology, in which each author wrote a different POV and a murder is at the core of the plot. So cool, I love it.

☽ The Dos and Donuts of Love by Adiba Jaigirdar (Jun 6th)
I don't know why, but the bookish Gods have decided to bless my 2023 with a lot of queer releases which feature my favourite tropes. This one, for example, features a TV baking competition and I am living for it. This sounds extremely right up my alley.

☽ Manslaughter Park by Tirzah Price (Jun 27th)
Now, I hated book two in this companion series. However, aside from the fact that it's a companion series, so we will follow different characters, I have recently discovered that this third book is indeed queer, which made my interest grow exponentially. Be gay, solve crime.

☽ One of Us is Back by Karen M. McManus (Jul 25th)
I have yet to read One of Us is Next, and I also want to reread the first book, but I cannot miss Karen M. McManus' newest book, can I? I have read almost all of them, and it's now a tradition to talk about them with my friend Debs, who also reads them all!

☽ The Brothers Hawthorne by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (Aug 29th)
Did we really need another book in this series? Absolutely not, especially not about the two brothers who already have a lot of page time. Did I hate the last book in the trilogy? Of course I did. Am I still anticipating this one because I am an absolute clown? Clearly.

☽ The Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan (Sep 26th)
This still feels unreal to me, because it was one of the most unexpected announcements of my life. I cannot wait to have my trio back, I miss Percy, Annabeth and Grover, and I honestly think I'll cry just as much as I will cry for The Sun and the Star in May. Oof.

☽ Gorgeous Gruesome Faces by Linda Cheng (Nov 7th)
This book doesn't even have a cover yet, but when you read a title like this and discover it is a sapphic YA horror which features a deadly k-pop competition and teen idols, how can you not add it to your TBR? You simply must. And I bet the cover is going to be stunning.

☽ The Sunbearer Duology #2 by Aiden Thomas (Nov 30th)
The book doesn't have a title nor a cover and I think there's a strong possibility it's going to be pushed back to next year, but until the author says so, I will count it as one of my most anticipated releases of 2023, and I will hope with all my heart it comes out in November.

☽ Careful What You Wish For by Sophie Gonzales (TBD)
Last but not least, anything Sophie Gonzales writes is going to be on my most anticipated releases list. I don't have a clue what this book is about. I don't even know what genre this is going to be. I only know I am going to read it, possibly before it comes out.

Now, a few honorable mentions, because I am me and I cannot pick just 23:

  • Friday I'm in Love by Camryn Garrett (Jan 10th);
  • As You Walk on By by Julian Winters (Jan 17th);
  • Tears in the Water by Margherita Scialla (Jan 17th);
  • The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by K.J. Charles (Mar 7th);
  • Tell Me How It Ends by Quinton Li (Apr 9th);
  • Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee (May 16th);
  • Love Letters from Joy by Melissa See (Jun 6th);
  • Going Bicostal by Dahlia Adler (Jun 13th);
  • In These Hallowed Halls by AA.VV. (Sep 12th);
  • Mermaids Never Drown edited by Zoraida Córdova and Natalie C. Parker (Sep 26th).

There are honestly many more, but I'll stop here or I'll never finish this article. Let me know about your most anticipated reads of the year, and I'll talk to you soon!
