It is at that funny time of year here in England where the weather cannot decide if it will be warm or cold. The temperatures are currently ranging from -1 to 15 (Celsius), sometimes multiple times in one day. I am sure there is some sort of debate to be had about the effects of climate change but I shall save that for another post! For now, it means that finding a meal that is light enough for warmer weather but warm enough to take some of the chill off.
Hence the soup. You can't really beat it. And yes, I am one of those people who drinks soup from a mug, simply because I am far too clumsy and would definitely splash soup all over my work outfit if I stopped paying attention. A mug eliminates such risks. I keep seeing jackfruit popping up everywhere these days, I think because many brands have caught on that this fruit can be made in practically anything meaty. I thought this would be the perfect lunch for this strange period of weather so gave it a go.
I mean...it was a £1.50 soup and it tastes exactly how you would expect a £1.50 tinned soup to taste. Perfectly fine, but nothing really special. I did not get any jackfruit in this at all. Nor much chili either. There was barely any spice to it and I think that the three beans really overpowered every other ingredient. I would even say that there was zero heat to this, which when you have chilli flavouring you are expecting at least some sort of heat. The texture was slightly grainy but I think that's just how many tinned soups are. I have yet to have a tinned soup that doesn't have even a slight graininess to it. I'm sure it's whatever they add to keep the products 'fresh' while it's tinned and for me personally, is not that big of a deal. Just something to be aware of.
Flavour wise though, despite being mild, is fine. It tastes like a three bean soup. It's quite chunky due to the beans (and the jackfruit I assume, but I didn't see any so...who knows!) so it did really help to fill me up without making me feel bloated or uncomfortable. It was tasty enough for a bean soup, but as I say it had none of that chili kick that you are told to expect on the tin, nor did I taste or sense any sort of jack fruit in the soup.
As I say, this was a £1.50 tin of soup. I do not expect anything fantastic for £1.50, but I do at least expect what it says on the tin which I really didn't get. It tastes fine, but doesn't taste how I expected it to taste.
Overall: 4/10. A perfectly fine soup, but not exactly what it is says on the tin.
