An active shooter situation is ongoing as of this writing in Lewiston, Maine, a city of around 37,000 which is now on lockdown. There were at least three sites where shooting broke out, and there are an unknown number of victims:
Multiple people were shot in three separate incidents Wednesday night in Lewiston, according to early police reports.
Police, fire and rescue personnel descended on Sparetime Recreation on Mollison Way about 7:15 p.m. after a report of an active shooter. Shortly after, reports came in that there was another shooting at Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant on Lincoln Street.
Lewiston public information officer Derrick St. Laurent told the Sun Journal at about 8:15 p.m. that another shooting was reported at the Walmart Distribution Center on Alfred A Plourde Parkway.
Early reports, though unconfirmed by police as of 8 p.m., were that multiple people were shot, some with possibly fatal injuries.
Lewiston is about 36 miles north of Portland and is the state's second-largest city.

Law enforcement has asked residents to shelter in place and stay inside with the doors locked. Schools in the area were also put on lockdown, even as parent-teacher conferences were taking place Wednesday evening.
"All, please get to a safe place if you are at or near a school for conferences we are going into lockdowns," Lewiston Public Schools Superintendent Jake Langlais said. "I will provide more information as soon as it is available and appropriate. Right now, we need to let law enforcement do what they need to do."

Update multiple casualties in Maine mass shooting

As we reported earlier, an armed gunman took to the streets of Lewiston, Maine, Wednesday evening and opened fire in at least three locations. Tragically, reports are now coming out that there are multiple casualties, with Fox News writing that there are 22 dead while ABC News is reporting 16.
Police have released a photo of a vehicle that they believe may have been used by the shooter:

CNN is reporting that the shooter used an AR-style rifle and that there are 16 dead and dozens injured:

"Maine State Police are ordering people in the state's second-largest city to shelter in place," the above tweet continued.
Although the local hospital did not provide an exact number of casualties, it's clear that they're dealing with a tragic situation.
A local hospital, the Central Maine Medical Center, said that they are reacting to a "mass casualty, mass shooter event."
As of 9 p.m., the hospital said that they cannot share the specifics on the number of casualties.
"Central Maine Healthcare is coordinating with area hospitals to take in patients," the hospital said.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Boston said in a social media post that they are helping with the response, and the FBI has also offered their assistance. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation.
Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline said he is "heartbroken for our city and our people."
As of now, the suspect is still on the loose and no motive has been established. We will keep you updated on this tragic situation.
UPDATE 10:35 ET from the Lewiston Sun-Journal:
At least one possible suspect had been identified, 40-year-old Robert Card.
The car police believed he was driving, a white Subaru Outback, was found near the Lisbon boat dock on Frost Hill Avenue near Route 196.
