I'm still working my way through Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way. I've recommended the book to many people. It's great!
But it's taking me a long time to get through it.
It's supposed to be a 12-week program. It's been almost two years and I haven't finished it yet!
I keep getting stuck on some of the exercises.
Resistance comes in and I put off doing the work.
I've been stuck on "week 9" since last June. Not really stuck. But I haven't finished all the exercises and I've been reluctant to move on.
But I'm moving on to week 10. I can circle back later.
One of the things from week 9 has been sticking with me, though.
Cameron says that our need to produce "great" art often makes it hard to produce any art at all.
Yep. I can relate to that.
Instead of doing the work of creating something, I over think it. I worry about how it will be received. And because I spend so much time thinking about it, I don't spend any time writing it.
Weeks and months go by.
But no work gets done.
That's why this exercise of a daily blog is good. There's no time to worry about a piece of writing being perfect. Good or bad, there's a deadline to meet.
If you do the work consistently, you will eventually have a couple of things that are good.
But if you second guess yourself before you start doing the work, you'll never get anything done.
So, stop trying to be great. Just do the work.
