A contemporary supernatural thriller. Former soldier, Jessica Kemp, known to most by her nickname of Cempa, awakens from an induced coma to discover that she is the victim of a serial killer's brutal attack. Detective Clayton informs her that she is the fifth victim and the only one to survive. However, a man called Martin Proctor somehow manages to visit Cempa while she is under armed guard in hospital. He tells her that he used to be a successful medium, someone who can talk to the dead, and that she did indeed die but that the Victims, the entities of the killers previous attacks, stopped her from passing over. To them she is the warrior, the only one of them strong enough not only to survive but to catch and kill the man responsible for more deaths than the police know about.
So begins Cempa's descent into a dark world where the dead have a place and men like Proctor can commune with them. Other occult forces are also at work, looking to steal the power of the Victims who have the ability to manifest themselves into our world. Every night she is plagued by a dream of a woman being stabbed to death; she lives it as if she is herself the victim, feels the pain and the fear, but each morning she wakes up again.
Detective Clayton wants to catch the serial killer as much as Cempa, but his department is short of personnel and resources as a result of another round of efficiencies. He does not believe in the supernatural, but he cannot explain how Cempa seems to be always one step ahead of them in the hunt, or why the information that she feeds him leads to more grisly discoveries.
Escaping the confines of the hospital and avoiding the stretched police team, Cempa sets out to end her nightmare, knowing that the police have not come close to identifying their suspect. While they depend on reason and their deductive processes, she turns to the supernatural world for allies and finds them. In a violent conclusion the logical world of Detective Clayton and the strange world that Cempa now inhabits collide.
