This year Keith came along with me as he was keen to see a butterfly…  | By Pete on August 29, 2024 |  Pirbright Common August and it is time to seek out the elusive Grayling butterfly and so I made the trip to Brookwood Cemetery and Pirbright Common, where I had seen them last year. This year Keith came along with me as he was keen to see a butterfly which, sadly, is now extinct in our native Kent. We travelled by train and approached the first site in the Cemetery where I had seen them last year. We were fortunate and estimate that there were 3-4 individuals present here. We then walked through to Pirbright Common and in the same area where I saw them last year there were another 4-5 individuals. Strangely despite this good number of Grayling being active, there were few other butterflies present compared to last year (one day earlier) when I recorded 10 different species.
